Common questions
How often should a domestic septic tank be cleaned?
On average every four years, though it depends on the type and age of the system and the number of people on the property. Regular pump-outs keep the tank operating properly and prevent damage that is much more expensive to fix.
What are the signs my septic tank is full?
Odours around the drains, a toilet that is slow to flush, gurgling in the pipes when water is running, pooling water above the tank, or unusually healthy grass over it. Ideally the tank gets pumped before any of these show up. Solid waste that backs up into the ag lines can cost thousands of dollars to repair.
How much does a pump-out cost?
It depends on where the property is, whether the pit lids are already exposed or need to be dug out, whether the truck can reach within about 30 metres of the lids, and whether someone will be on site. Call for an obligation-free quote. Where we can, we group jobs in the same area on the same day to keep costs down.
Do I need to prepare anything before you arrive?
It helps if someone is on the property so we can find the lids together. If you can, clear away any dirt or grass covering the lids beforehand. Please do not open the lids yourself. It is a real safety risk for children and pets.
How do I look after the tank between cleans?
Only put ordinary sewage and wastewater into the system. No fats, food scraps, wet wipes, towelling or plastics. Flush toilet paper only. Avoid bleach, harsh chemicals and pesticides. Biodegradable products, low in sodium and phosphorus, are much easier on the system. Stick to a regular pump-out schedule and the system lasts far longer.
